San Francisco’s best restaurants in 2026 run from the city’s four three-star Michelin rooms (Californios, Atelier Crenn, Benu and Quince) to neighborhood places that cost a fraction of that. Californios, a Mexican tasting menu in SoMa, earned a third star in June 2026. For value, start with the Michelin Bib Gourmand list.

This guide replaces our 2023 list. Several restaurants on that list have moved, changed or could not be confirmed as open, so we started over. Every place below appears in the 2026 Michelin Guide California or on its own current website. Restaurants change fast, so check hours and book through the restaurant before you go.

We sell homes in San Francisco and wine country. Clients who are relocating often ask where to eat while they tour neighborhoods, so we have tied each pick to the part of the city it sits in.

How we chose these restaurants

We used three tests. First, the restaurant had to be recognized in the 2026 Michelin Guide California, announced in June 2026, or be a long-running local institution with a current, working website. Second, we had to be able to confirm it is open. Third, it had to be useful to someone visiting or moving here, not only to people chasing a rare reservation.

We left out phone numbers and most addresses. They go out of date, and the restaurant’s own site is the better source.

The three-star tier

San Francisco has four three-star restaurants in the 2026 guide. These are long tasting menus, priced for a special occasion, and they book up well ahead.

  • Californios (South of Market). Chef Val Cantú’s Mexican tasting menu went from two stars to three in 2026. Coverage of the ceremony called it the first Mexican restaurant in the world to earn three stars. It opened in the Mission in 2015 and moved to SoMa in 2021.
  • Atelier Crenn. Dominique Crenn’s restaurant kept its three stars.
  • Benu. Kept three stars and remains on the World’s 50 Best North America list.
  • Quince. Kept three stars. Chef Michael Tusk also won a 2026 James Beard Award.

If you are looking at homes and condos in South of Market, Californios is a short walk from much of the neighborhood.

Two-star restaurants worth planning around

Six San Francisco restaurants hold two stars in 2026: Acquerello, Birdsong, Kiln, Lazy Bear, Saison and Sons & Daughters.

Sons & Daughters

Our old list placed Sons & Daughters near Union Square. That is no longer right. In 2025 it moved to 2875 18th Street in the Mission, in the former Osito space. Chef Harrison Cheney, who has led the kitchen since 2023, cooks a Nordic-leaning tasting menu built on Northern California produce. In 2026 it kept two stars and also received Michelin’s special award for service. The new home puts it in the Inner Mission, close to Lazy Bear.

Kiln and Lazy Bear

Kiln, in the Civic Center area, is a small Nordic-leaning tasting room. Lazy Bear, in the Mission, serves a communal dinner-party-style menu. Both kept two stars this year.

One-star picks by neighborhood

The one-star list is where San Francisco gets interesting. These restaurants are still special, but most are easier to book and less formal.

Restaurant Neighborhood Style
Kin Khao Union Square Thai
Nari Japantown Thai
7 Adams Japantown Californian
Mister Jiu’s Chinatown Chinese
Sorrel Presidio Heights Californian-Italian
Wolfsbane (new in 2026) Dogpatch Contemporary
Naides (new in 2026) Near Union Square Filipino tasting menu

Other one-star restaurants in the city this year include Angler, Hilda and Jesse, Niku Steakhouse, Nisei, San Ho Won, Ssal, State Bird Provisions and The Progress.

Kin Khao and Nari

Both come from chef Pim Techamuanvivit and both kept their stars. Kin Khao is the more casual of the two and works for lunch near Union Square. Nari, in Japantown, is the larger dinner room.

Wolfsbane and Naides

Wolfsbane is the new restaurant from Rupert and Carrie Blease, in the Dogpatch space that followed their earlier restaurant, Lord Stanley. It earned a star in its first year. If you like it, the Dogpatch and Central Waterfront area is worth a look for lofts and newer condos. Naides, from Patrick Gabon and Celine Wuu, is a Filipino tasting menu. Michelin singled out its nonalcoholic drink pairings.

Sorrel

Sorrel is a neighborhood restaurant with a star. It sits in Presidio Heights, one of the city’s quieter residential districts.

Bib Gourmand: good food at a fair price

Michelin’s Bib Gourmand list marks places with good cooking at moderate prices. It is the best shortcut for everyday dining. San Francisco Bib Gourmands highlighted in 2026 coverage include:

  • Kitchen Istanbul (Richmond District). Turkish, and a new Bib Gourmand in 2026. Michelin pointed to its manti, a beef and lamb dumpling.
  • Izakaya Rintaro (Mission). Japanese izakaya.
  • Good Good Culture Club (Mission). Asian.
  • Outerlands (Outer Sunset). Californian, a few blocks from Ocean Beach.

Outerlands is a good stop if you are touring Outer Sunset homes, where single-family houses tend to cost less than in the central neighborhoods.

A classic: Scoma’s on Fisherman’s Wharf

Not every good meal needs a star. Scoma’s has served seafood on Pier 47 since 1965 and is still open daily for lunch and dinner. Expect cioppino, crab and chowder in a wood-paneled room on the water. It is the easy answer when out-of-town guests want the Wharf.

Tips for booking and eating well

  • Tasting-menu restaurants usually release tables weeks ahead on a fixed schedule. Check each restaurant’s booking page for its release date.
  • Many starred restaurants charge a deposit or the full price at booking. Read the cancellation policy.
  • Bar seats and early weeknight times are the easiest way into a busy room.
  • San Francisco Restaurant Week ran October 16 to 25, 2026. Watch for the next one if you want set menus at lower prices.
  • Some restaurants add a service charge to the bill. Check the menu before you tip.
