Kentfield is an unincorporated community of about 6,900 people in Marin County’s Ross Valley, between Greenbrae and Ross along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, and home to the College of Marin’s Kentfield campus. Its homes range from wooded hillside lots on the slopes of Mount Tamalpais to flatter streets near Corte Madera Creek, and Census figures put its median home value at the survey’s $2 million ceiling, so a Kentfield agent should be able to read hillside due diligence, county permit records and fire-zone disclosures as well as price.

This guide is published by Diamond Real Estate Group, one of the brokerages listed. Our broker is listed first; other agents are in alphabetical order. The order is not a ranking, and inclusion is not an endorsement.

How we chose the agents in this guide

Each agent below met three checks in October 2026:

  1. A current California license. We opened each agent’s record on the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) public lookup and confirmed the name, license type (salesperson or broker) and "Licensed" status. We left out anyone whose record showed no responsible broker, a suspension or an expired license.
  2. A named brokerage. Each agent’s DRE record shows the responsible broker they work under, and it matches the brokerage on their profile.
  3. A public profile that names Kentfield, or its immediate neighbor Greenbrae. We opened each agent’s brokerage profile. The first table lists agents whose profiles name Kentfield. Because few profiles name Kentfield itself, the second table lists agents whose profiles name neighboring Greenbrae, where their office is about a mile from Kentfield; their profiles do not name Kentfield.

We did not rank agents, and we did not consider sales volume, reviews or awards. Licenses and affiliations change, so verify the license yourself before you sign anything, and interview more than one agent.

Source: Census Reporter profile of Kentfield, CA, using U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2024 5-year estimates. Small-area figures have wide margins of error.

The Census Bureau reports Kentfield’s median owner-occupied value at its top-coded ceiling of $2 million or more, which means more than half of owner-occupied homes were valued above that level. These are five-year survey estimates, not current sale prices. To price a specific home, an agent should pull recent sales of similar homes on the same hillside or street; our Kentfield comparable sales guide explains how.

Kentfield settings: hillside lots, the flats and the creek

Kentfield’s hillside homes come with steep driveways, retaining walls, wooded lots and drainage questions, while homes on the flats near Corte Madera Creek raise flood-zone questions instead. Remodels and additions often run into slope, setback and septic or sewer limits. Our guides to comparing Kentfield property settings, hillside home due diligence, renovation feasibility records and the hillside ownership budget go into detail. Costs and rules specific to a Kentfield purchase

  • Transfer tax. The Marin County Recorder’s transfer tax sheet lists the county documentary transfer tax at $0.55 per $500 of value, and the only city tax it lists is San Rafael’s. Kentfield is unincorporated, so the county tax alone applies: $2,200 on a $2 million sale. Who pays is negotiable; confirm the figure on your escrow estimate.
  • County zoning and permits. As an unincorporated community, Kentfield is governed by the Marin County Title 22 Development Code. Compare the seller’s disclosures with County permit records before relying on a remodel plan; our renovation feasibility guide covers the basics.
  • Short-term rentals. Stays under 30 days in unincorporated Marin need a county license under the Marin County short-term rental program, which caps licenses countywide and issues new ones from a waitlist.
  • Fire hazard zones and AB 38. Check whether the address is mapped on the State Fire Marshal’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps. In High and Very High zones, sellers may need to provide AB 38 defensible space documentation.
  • Flood and other hazards. The natural hazard disclosure report shows whether an address is in a mapped flood, landslide or fault zone, which matters near the creek and on slopes.

Compass agents are licensed under Compass California II, Inc. (DRE #01527235). Coldwell Banker Realty agents work from the Greenbrae office at 350 Bon Air Center and are licensed under NRT West, Inc. (DRE #01908304); that office page lists Kentfield among the communities it serves, but the agents’ own profiles do not. Some DRE records show a legal name that differs from the name the agent uses (for example Paul Jonathan Bragstad, Richard Quirino Trono, Theresa Ellen Donohue and Kristin Hammer Klein); in each case the license number on the profile matches the record we linked. Kevin Kearney’s license record shows an expiration date of December 6, 2026; check the record before you sign.

How to vet a Kentfield agent

  1. Ask how they check County permits. Kentfield is unincorporated, so ask how the agent compares Marin County permit records with what was built.
  2. Ask for comparables from the same setting. A hillside home with views, a creekside home on the flats and a home near the College of Marin should not be priced from the same sales.
  3. Ask about drainage, foundation and sewer inspections. For hillside and older homes, ask which inspections they recommend before you remove contingencies.
  4. Ask about fire zones and insurance. Ask how they handle AB 38 documentation and when they suggest getting insurance quotes.
  5. Ask about flood zones near the creek. Ask whether the natural hazard report shows a flood zone and what that means for insurance and lending.
  6. Verify the license yourself. Look up the agent on the DRE site and confirm the responsible broker matches the brokerage they name.

Kentfield questions we hear

Is Kentfield a city?

No. Kentfield is an unincorporated community, so Marin County handles planning and permits under its Title 22 Development Code.

Does Kentfield have a city transfer tax?

No. The Marin County Recorder’s sheet lists only San Rafael as adding a city tax, and Kentfield is unincorporated, so a sale carries the county tax of $0.55 per $500. Confirm the figure on your escrow estimate.

What is the median home value in Kentfield?

The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 estimate is top-coded at "$2 million or more," per Census Reporter. For a current price, ask an agent for recent sales of similar homes.

Why are some agents listed for Greenbrae rather than Kentfield?

Few public profiles name Kentfield itself. We included agents whose profiles name neighboring Greenbrae, where their office is, and said so plainly in a separate table. Our Greenbrae guide lists more agents from that office.
