Sonoma’s 2025 Grape Figures: Higher Average Value Did Not Offset Lower Harvested Tonnage

A buyer following Sonoma County vineyard conditions needs to separate the value of each ton from the amount of fruit actually harvested. The county’s official 2025 crop-report presentation provides a clear example: a higher average value per ton accompanied lower total winegrape value.

It also illustrates a second research habit that matters in a fast-moving acquisition. When a public agenda contains revised materials, identify the version supporting the figure before inserting it into a property model.

What the official agenda currently reports

Sonoma County’s September 15, 2026 agenda item lists revised crop-report materials. Its text reports 186,845.8 tons harvested in 2025, down 11.66%, and an average value of $3,103.23 per ton. Total winegrape value was $579,825,500, down 7.46%.

Those are county-wide crop figures. They are not a quote for a particular variety, an appraisal of vineyard real estate or a statement of net farm income.

Price and volume can move in opposite directions

A simple hypothetical example explains the relationship. An operation selling 100 tons at $3,000 receives $300,000. If its next crop sells for $3,100 per ton but only ninety tons are sold, receipts are $279,000.

The unit price rises by approximately 3.3%, while gross receipts fall by 7%. Neither calculation is contradictory. The higher price applies to fewer units. These invented figures illustrate the mechanism and do not reproduce an individual Sonoma vineyard’s results.

Harvested volume is different from a biological yield diagnosis

The county’s narrative states that significant tonnage remained on the vines because of reduced demand. That is a relevant distinction when evaluating what a production decline means. A lower amount harvested cannot automatically be attributed entirely to the condition or productive capability of the vines.

For an actual property, distinguish what grew, what was harvested, what was accepted by a purchaser and what was paid for. A combined annual total may not explain where a reduction occurred.

A report version belongs beside the number

Preserve the source date and the document version used. If an earlier summary or another account gives a different figure, establish the reason before averaging the numbers or selecting one without explanation.

A revised attachment is also a reason to check dependent calculations. A model using a revised numerator and an earlier denominator can create a ratio that appears precise but does not correspond to a consistent set of reported results.

Keep this county report separate from the USDA/CDFA Grape Crush Report. That dataset reports purchased-grape returns on a delivered basis, and its District 3 combines Sonoma and Marin. The county crop figures above concern Sonoma County. Our grape-report analysis for vineyard buyers explains the different units. Retain each source’s geography and coverage rather than averaging figures that describe different groups.

The property needs its own receipts and expense evidence

A county average can provide context for questions about an offered vineyard. It should not replace the relevant fruit contract, accepted delivery quantities, actual prices and expense records.

Nor should a percentage change in county crop value be applied directly as the same percentage change in every vineyard’s real estate value. The property may include a residence, infrastructure, a leasehold relationship or other interests that the crop statistic does not measure.

Use the finding to improve the acquisition comparison

A useful analysis states the crop year, geographic scope, units and source version, then connects those figures to the property’s actual operating story. That approach makes a market discussion more informative than relying on a single headline about price or value.
