Windsor or Petaluma for a SMART Commute? Compare the Whole Journey

A home search built around SMART should begin with a particular journey: the destination, the required arrival time and the days the trip will occur. A station on the map is useful, but it is only one part of the commute.
Windsor and Petaluma illustrate the difference. Both appear in SMART’s published service. Their position on the line changes the rail portion, while the actual home and destination determine the travel on either side. Comparing those components gives buyers a more useful answer than ranking towns by station proximity alone.
A dated timetable example makes the difference visible
On the SMART schedule page checked October 28, 2026, one weekday southbound trip shows Windsor at 7:30 a.m., Petaluma Downtown at 8:11 a.m. and Larkspur at 8:54 a.m. For that trip, the published station-to-station intervals are 84 minutes from Windsor and 43 minutes from Petaluma Downtown.
These are calculations from that timetable, not measured door-to-door travel times or a promise about future service. Check the current schedule and service alerts for the intended travel date.
The first leg can change which home is convenient
A centrally located home may allow a practical walk to the station. A home marketed under the same town name may require a drive, a bicycle ride or another connection. Identify the actual route, crossing conditions and the time needed to reach the platform comfortably.
For a buyer comparing a larger property outside town with a smaller home near the center, this can be a meaningful ownership tradeoff. The train journey might be identical once aboard, but the start and end of the day can feel quite different.
Larkspur is not the final destination for every rider
A San Francisco-bound traveler must also evaluate the connection beyond the train. SMART’s schedule page flags ferry connections with less than a ten-minute transfer and says those are not recommended for people walking between the station and ferry terminal.
The wider point is to test the connection as a sequence. Arrival at the train station, the transfer, the next departure and the final walk or transit leg all belong in the comparison. A rail arrival time is not an office arrival time.

The return journey deserves equal attention
A useful morning departure does not establish a workable evening. Test the return after an ordinary workday and after a late meeting. Consider what happens if a connection is missed or the household’s plans change.
A buyer who commutes two fixed days each week may make a different choice from someone whose schedule changes daily. The goal is to understand the fit with the household’s actual pattern rather than prescribe one town for everyone.
Keep transport value separate from a guaranteed price premium
Convenient transit can be valuable to a particular buyer. That does not establish a uniform adjustment for every property near a station. Compare the home, its condition, ownership costs and actual alternatives alongside the journey.
