Ukiah’s Wild Gardens: A Museum Landscape Built Around Living Relationships

A museum garden can do more than provide a pleasant approach to a building. At Ukiah’s Grace Hudson Museum, the Wild Gardens extend interpretation into the living landscape, connecting plants with cultural practices, habitat and care.
The design gives visitors another way to understand the region. Objects inside the museum have relationships with materials and knowledge outside it, and those connections become easier to see when plants are part of the experience.
The garden was conceived as an educational environment
The Museum’s own garden account dates public access to October 2017. It describes a setting devoted to native Northern California plants, regional ecosystems and Pomo cultural traditions and stewardship.
The site includes an outdoor classroom and a brush arbor inspired by traditional Pomo architecture. These spaces give the garden places for teaching and gathering as well as walking.
The arrangement makes interpretation spatial. A person can move between a plant, a demonstration area and a place to sit, allowing different forms of learning to occur within one landscape.
Art helps connect the garden with the collection
The Museum records a steel fish-trap sculpture installed in 2018 beside a water feature. Pomo artist and metalworker Bruce Smith based the design on a basket in the Museum’s collection.
The change of scale and material is significant. A form associated with a woven object becomes a prominent garden element, inviting attention to the knowledge and purpose behind it.
The garden account also identifies benches made by regional artists. Seating contributes to interpretation by giving visitors time to pause and notice the setting, rather than treating the grounds simply as a route between doors.
The design involved practical technical work
PGAdesign’s project record describes its collaboration with Ann Baker Landscape Architecture and its technical design services for the outdoor campus.
The firm connects the project with water conservation, environmental education and the relationship between Pomo people and plants.
This is a useful reminder that an apparently informal garden can depend on substantial design coordination. Grading, planting areas, water and circulation need to work together for an educational landscape to function.
The living character of the result does not remove the need for planning. It gives that planning a continuing responsibility as plants establish and uses develop.
The people maintaining the garden describe real tradeoffs
In a 2025 California Native Plant Society feature, garden manager Andrea Davis and curator Alyssa Boge explain how the landscape is cared for.
They describe preparation to reduce invasive plants, irrigation adapted to different growing areas and the use of sheet mulching where hand weeding alone is impractical. They also acknowledge that mulch can limit access for ground-nesting bees.
That candor makes the account valuable. Landscape care involves choices with consequences, even when the goal is to support native habitat.
The same firsthand account explains that the salmon-stream feature is an educational representation, rather than a stream stocked with salmon. Its role is to help interpret the relationship between the fish and Pomo life.
What the garden offers a local observer
For someone getting to know Ukiah, the Wild Gardens provide a concentrated example of landscape understood through relationships: plants and people, objects and materials, design and continuing maintenance.
A visit can encourage attention to processes that are easy to miss in a conventional ornamental garden. The interest lies in what grows, how it is cared for and the knowledge that gives it meaning.
