A railway car can survive after its transport career in an unexpected form. Petaluma and Santa Rosa 63 spent decades incorporated into a house before preservationists recovered its body and rebuilt it as an operating railcar.

The story connects Sonoma County’s electric railway history with Solano County’s landscape and the Western Railway Museum. It is a particularly clear example of preservation requiring both research and practical reconstruction.

A 1904 car served several Sonoma communities

The Museum’s Car 63 roster identifies a wooden combination baggage and passenger car built by San Francisco’s Holman Car Company in 1904. It operated between Petaluma, Sebastopol and Santa Rosa, with a branch to Forestville.

The combination design carried different kinds of traffic within one vehicle. It belonged to an interurban system linking communities rather than only circulating through the streets of one city.

The roster describes a clerestory roof and operating controls at both ends. These are practical design features associated with how the car was used, as well as recognizable elements of its appearance.

The car body became part of a rural house

Passenger service ended in 1932. The Museum records that the dismantled car’s body was used in a house in the hills west of Fairfield until its acquisition in 1967.

That second use helped the body survive when much of the original operating equipment was lost. A vehicle designed for movement became a fixed part of a dwelling.

Its eventual recovery required removing the surrounding house. Preservation sometimes begins with disentangling an object from a later use, rather than receiving an intact artifact ready for display.

Restoration joined surviving fabric with replacement equipment

The roster describes restoration between 1967 and 1973, using trucks and traction motors salvaged from a Yakima Valley vehicle. The project returned the car to railway operation through a combination of original body and recovered mechanical components.

This is an important distinction in transport preservation. A surviving body and an operating vehicle are different achievements. The latter requires compatible wheels, motors, brakes and controls as well as careful work on the visible structure.

The roster’s condition note was last modified in 2011. It documents that stage in the car’s preservation history rather than guaranteeing which equipment will operate on a particular 2026 visit.

The museum chose a site with its own electric-rail history

The Western Railway Museum’s institutional history traces the organization to the purchase of an Oakland streetcar in 1946. It identifies Rio Vista Junction, a stop on the Sacramento Northern electric main line, as the permanent site selected in 1960.

The Museum later acquired a substantial railway right-of-way. Its history describes using archived drawings and schematics to rehabilitate track for an interpretive journey.

The setting therefore contributes to the experience. Historic equipment operates within a preserved rail corridor, allowing movement and landscape to form part of the interpretation.

A regional history destination near Suisun City

The Museum’s current visitor page lists its Highway 12 location and describes rides on the former Sacramento Northern line. The operator selects equipment according to operational conditions and volunteer availability.

For people exploring the wider Suisun City area, Car 63 adds a specific story to this regional institution. It links several North Bay communities through construction, transport, domestic reuse and restoration.

The car’s survival shows how local history can cross county lines. An object created for one landscape may be preserved through another, carrying evidence of both in its continuing life.
