The Great Redwood Trail is a regional vision, but its usefulness grows through specific local connections. In Willits, the rail-with-trail project is designed to connect East Hill Road with East Commercial Street through a separated pedestrian and bicycle corridor.

That local geography matters more to a daily outing than the total length of the eventual regional network. The project’s 2026 funding story also shows why construction, public opening and long-range trail planning should be followed as separate milestones.

A north-south route within Willits

The City’s project page describes a 1.6-mile Class I separated pathway within the rail corridor. Its purpose is to provide a nonmotorized connection through the city as part of the broader Great Redwood Trail effort.

The 2025 General Plan annual progress report, presented in January 2026, describes a ten-foot-wide paved route, three pedestrian bridges at creek crossings, lighting, landscaping and other supporting features. These details identify a designed urban connection, rather than an informal walking track beside the rails.

Creek crossings are central pieces

A corridor can look continuous on a map while containing places that need substantial engineering. The three bridges illustrate that point. A walking or cycling route must maintain a usable connection across waterways as well as across ordinary ground.

For residents, the resulting continuity is the benefit to evaluate. A route that can be followed through the city serves a different purpose from isolated paved sections that require an awkward transition. The bridges and access connections help determine how the project performs as a whole.

Additional state support arrived in 2026

The State Coastal Conservancy’s September 2026 awards release lists a grant of up to $935,000 to augment its November 2023 grant for the Willits project. The funded scope remains the 1.6-mile route between East Hill Road and East Commercial Street.

An additional grant is evidence of support for delivery. It is different from an opening notice. The sources cited here do not establish that every part of the route is available to users on the article’s review date; follow the City’s current access directions before planning a trip.

Rail-with-trail is a deliberate design distinction

The regional agency’s master-plan explanation distinguishes sections using a historic rail alignment from sections developed alongside rail. That difference helps explain the Willits project’s name and the need to understand each local segment on its own terms.

A regional line on a map does not mean that every segment has the same surface, setting or operating conditions. The local project design establishes what users can expect at that location, while the regional plan describes how separate pieces may eventually connect.

What the route could contribute to a home location

A household might value the corridor for a short walk, a cycling connection or a longer north-south trip. The first connection from home to an authorized entry and the last connection to the destination remain important parts of that use.

For a buyer, it is useful to compare both the current travel pattern and the intended completed route. A future connection can add an appealing option without becoming the sole basis for choosing a home that otherwise does not fit.

The Willits project gives the regional trail story a concrete local form: a defined length, named endpoints and bridges that address actual gaps in the route. Those details are the ones to follow as construction and access updates continue.
