Monte Rio Redwoods After the 2025 Expansion: A Larger Forest, an Evolving Park
By Matthew Martinez, Founder, CEO & Managing Broker, Diamond Real Estate Group. California DRE #01869679.
Monte Rio’s forest setting became substantially more connected in 2025. An additional 1,517 acres joined Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve, enlarging a public landscape established only a few years earlier.
For someone considering a home in the lower Russian River area, the acquisition is a meaningful local change. Its significance extends beyond the number of acres: it links forest, creek corridors and protected lands while leaving decisions about future recreational facilities to a public planning process.
What joined the park
The County’s June 2025 expansion FAQ records the addition to the original Dutch Bill Creek property acquired in 2020. Regional Parks identifies the enlarged park and preserve as approximately 2,030 acres.
Acquisition partner Sonoma Land Trust describes second- and third-growth coast redwood and Douglas-fir forest formerly held by Mendocino Redwood Company. It says the protection links more than 22,000 contiguous acres of conserved land stretching between the coast, Bohemian Highway and the Jenner Headlands area.
That is a landscape connection, not a promise of a continuous signed public trail across every adjoining property. Ecological continuity and recreational access have different maps.
Interim access is a real stage
The official park planning FAQ describes public recreation on the expanded property and initial routes ranging from a gentle Dutch Bill Creek walk to a hillier forest route. It also explains that future facilities will be shaped through planning.
This makes the park different from a fully developed recreation complex with a settled collection of trailheads, programs and amenities. A household can value the forest now while recognizing that its longer-term visitor experience is still being designed.
A master plan balances several uses
The planning-process page explains that a master plan will guide public access, stewardship, maintenance and facilities. Its June 2025 update says the acquisition required the process to incorporate the new property. That dated update should not be converted into an assumed completion schedule.
Combining new land with an existing park creates choices about where use belongs. A legacy logging road might offer a practical route, but its condition, drainage and relationship to habitat still matter. An attractive clearing is not automatically an approved picnic or camping site. Those are the kinds of questions a plan resolves.
Read “near the park” at the scale of an actual outing
A property can sit near the preserve’s boundary without having a convenient public entry. For a home search, identify the route to an authorized access point and consider how the return trip fits the outing. A short walk under redwoods and a longer hill route can serve very different routines.
Also consider the setting at home. Some buyers prioritize a wooded outlook and privacy; others want more sunlight around the house or an easier connection to daily errands. A larger public forest does not remove those differences between individual properties.
A conservation milestone with an ongoing story
The acquisition gives Monte Rio a more substantial public forest landscape and gives managers a broader area for coordinated stewardship. The next chapters concern how recreation and habitat protection work together across that land.
Following the planning record offers a more useful understanding than treating the expansion as either an unchanged forest or a finished park. It is protected land with current public use and a future that will be refined through management and public input.
