Bothin Marsh’s Next Chapter: The 2026 Design Work Behind “Ring the Marsh”

Bothin Marsh brings a shoreline landscape into the daily experience of southern Mill Valley. The route through and alongside the marsh serves walkers and cyclists, while the wetland provides a setting that feels different from an ordinary street corridor.
Keeping both functions as conditions change is the aim of the Evolving Shorelines adaptation project. Its 2026 updates describe design and review work. For a homebuyer, the important distinction is between the route available now and the future alignment being developed.
What “Ring the Marsh” means
Marin County’s Bothin Marsh project page describes a preferred concept that moves the trail from the marsh toward its perimeter. The aim is to create more room for tidal wetland habitat while maintaining public connectivity and a view of the marsh.
That is a different design response from simply raising the existing route in place. The location of a path affects the space available for the wetland as well as how people reach it from surrounding neighborhoods. The concept therefore combines an ecological question with a transportation and access question.
Design review continued in 2026
The County reports a March 9, 2026 presentation to the Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s Design Review Board covering proposed restoration and trail realignment. A May 6 community open house connected the project with Mill Valley’s broader shoreline adaptation planning. The County describes further refinement using agency and public feedback.
A December 2025 update on the project’s main page targeted CEQA public review for 2027. That target describes a planned review stage, rather than a construction opening date. A drawing of proposed amenities should be read in that context.
Today’s preserve has its own useful details
The County’s Bothin Marsh Preserve guide describes a 106-acre wetland with the Mill Valley-Sausalito and Charles F. McGlashan pathways. A popular entry is on the 800 block of Miller Avenue, across from Almonte Boulevard. The guide lists street parking and no restrooms at the preserve.
Those present-day details belong in a realistic outing plan. They also help distinguish the existing experience from proposed future trailheads, parking changes or facilities. A household can enjoy the preserve today while following the design process for its next phase.
Why the connection from the home matters
A nearby shoreline route may support a short walk, an exercise ride or a longer connection toward another destination. Each use starts with the streets and crossings between the home and the path. Two addresses equally close to the marsh on a map may have different practical approaches.
Walk the relevant connection and consider when it would be used. An occasional weekend visit has different demands from a regular trip to work or school. Current weather and path conditions matter to the outing, while proposed long-range changes belong in a separate understanding of the area’s future.
A landscape that needs room to adapt
The project reveals an important feature of shoreline living: the public landscape requires choices about where infrastructure belongs. Moving a trail can be part of preserving what makes the setting appealing, rather than only a change in recreational routing.
For the home itself, evaluate the actual property and current records independently of the public concept. A future trail realignment does not establish a private parcel’s elevation, flood status or insurance terms. Its relevance is the evolving public setting and the connections around it.
